Model Electronic Railway Group (MERG)
Founded in 1967, the Group’s aim is to actively promote and advance the use of electronic and computer technology for model railway operation. Railway modelling, one of the world’s most popular hobbies is ideally suited to take advantage of these technologies, and the application of electronics and computers can be used to good effect to add enhanced features and realism to model railway operation including:
- Command control (DCC and/or computer interfacing)
- Train-on-track detection
- Signalling
- Sound
- Scenic effects
As might be expected, scale or gauge are largely immaterial.
The Group provides opportunities for adults interested in the application of electronics and computers in Railway Modelling to broaden their knowledge and share information and ideas. Merg do this through a regular journal and many Technical Bulletins published by members for members, by thier email discussion group and by a programme of meetings and visits. Merg also run occasional one day courses and provide tutors for weekend courses held at Missenden Abbey. For further details of forthcoming courses see the News page.
Where appropriate kits for construction of member designed equipment are made available to members, currrently these include Computer Control and DCC equipment.
The Group actively seeks to participate at UK Model Railway Exhibitions where we are able to provide a working demonstration stand manned by our members who will discuss and demonstrate to visitors various aspects of our sphere of interest.
