Back Water
by Bob Alderman
Back Water was built as an entry to the Gauge 0 Guild's Diorama Competition at Guildex, Telford in 2007. The requirements of the entry was that it should not exceed a certain area and had to have something "railway" on it.
The idea came to me on the boring part of a transatlantic flight. For the remainder of the flight and the return to the UK I effectively built it in my head. This meant that when I came to the actual construction I had a very clear picture of the various structures. The inspiration came in part from seeing derelict or semi derelict industry alongside canals. I have penchant for such scenes.
The structures are made either wholly in plasticard or plasticard facing on foam board. Detailing has been done with various components, gas lamps from Andy Duncan, the signal from MSE. The extensive pipe gantry is from Plastruct components. The back-scene is a 4mm industrial town from Townscene. There are a number of working lights around the scene and the whole is dimly lit with the aim of reflecting a wet November afternoon.

The effort was rewarded with second place in the competition.
