ALBION QUARRY - Scale 7mm: 1ft

Abreviated version

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Dimensions:

  • The scenic area is 12’ long by 3’9” wide, plus the fiddle yard.
  • Overall dimension 19’ long x 4’ wide.
  • The track level is 3’ 9” above the floor. The top of the lighting unit is 6’9” above the floor.
  • A space for the operators and stock storage is required behind.
  • 2 tables 6’ x 3’ from the venue would be helpful.
  • The layout is self-supporting on tubular steel legs. It has an integral lighting system.
  • The drapes that surround the layout have been treated with a fire retardant that conforms to BS5867 Pt. 2. The drapes are approximately 50mm clear of the floor.
  • No barriers are provided.
NB. The fiddle yard overhangs the last baseboard, right hand side when viewed from the front. Please can you avoid putting layout access, “Albion Quarry” or another layout’s, at this end for stock security?

Power requirements:

  • A single 13A socket
  • Power leads are RCD protected
  • Lighting 200W
  • Track power 5W
  • Soldering iron 25W

Number of operators:

Three (3), preferably four (4).  Accommodation can generally be on the basis of two sharing, but note that one of my potential operators has slight disability and too many stairs can be a problem and would be better off in a single room.  If we have to travel over 200 miles then we would like to stay a further night after the show.

Transport:

The layout travels in a long wheelbase Transit or similar. Hire fees and fuel costs are requested.
Van hire:
Budget £300.00. Correct as of April 2008. (I will probably spend less than this.)
If using a van and four operators then a second vehicle will be needed.
Allow 30 mpg for van fuel costs.
Allow 40 mpg for car.

Insurance:

  • Layout - £8000.00
  • Stock – £5500.00 Individual items over £200.00 separately identified.

SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR GUIDES
----------------------------------------------
ALBION QUARRY Scale 7mm: 1ft

The layout is a fictitious branch off the Bletchley – Verney Junction line. It depicts the end of the line at a Portland stone quarry. Portland stone at this location is fact, but it was never quarried.

It has been assumed that the quarry is owned by one of the Portland companies in Dorset and has recently locomotive haulage.

The quarry and branch are independent and only meet within the works. The stone comes from the quarry and travels to the works where both finished work and rough stone blocks are transferred for distribution to the wider world.

The object of the layout is to illustrate the quarrying of “dimension stone”, which is stone intended for construction or elaborate mason’s work. Various items of quarrying machinery are shown, some unique to Portland. The works shows an example of an early circular saw and a later frame saw. There is a mason’s yard were detail stone cutting is carried out. The small wagons on the quarry line are based on horse-drawn examples of the Portland Merchant’s railway.

The layout is wired for conventional DC control but a throw of a switch allows it to use DCC with the Lenz system.

All the structures are scratchbuilt, mainly from plasticard. Rolling stock is all kit built. The small quarry wagons are cast whitemetal from my own patterns.

Two different coupling systems are used. Alex Jackson’s are used on the branch and H0 Scale Kadee’s in the quarry.
